University Core Curriculum
Digital Media Faculty
The Digital Media degree integrates creative and critical thinking within the context of technologically advanced artistic expression. With its foundations in interactivity and communication theory, Digital Media focuses on multimedia and multi-modal interfaces in which combinations of text, graphics, gesture, movement, touch and sound are used by people and machines to communicate with one another. In contrast to the traditional artistic paradigm, in which a singular individual "master" has autonomous artistic authority over a given artifact (which is fixed and unchangeable in nature), this program will emphasize a "new media" paradigm that champions authorial multiplicity, interactivity, variable output and the prioritization of the outworking of artistic processes over a fixed product.

Digital Media Objectives (BA)

  • Establish and defend an artistic style within your work based on sound artistic theories, practices and knowledge.
  • Create examples of dynamic, kinetic and generative design work incorporating elements such as audio, video, animation, robotics, sculpture, mobiles and process-based art.
  • Design, develop and build graphical user interfaces for a variety of technology products utilizing the latest in interactivity design with an eye toward the user experience and the function of the device.
  • Integrate product design concepts into the development of contemporary interfaces.
  • Modify traditional media design principles to support digital delivery mechanisms.
  • Create one example of multimedia, multi-modal interactive design work (in which a user has a material effect on the progression of a given piece), such as a multi-user installation or creative human-computer interface, along with an artist's statement and process documentation.
